Platini said last weekend that Poland and Ukraine risked losing the right to host the tournament if stadiums in their capitals were not ready. He said UEFA would make a decision on that at a meeting in Bordeaux in late September.

Arriving in Ukraine after a visit to Poland, Platini met with Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and President Viktor Yushchenko -- whose personal backing for the joint bid to host Euro 2012 helped convince UEFA officials.

'You have three months to work together to give Poland and Ukraine a way of hosting a fantastic Euro,' Platini said at a meeting with Yushchenko. 'I am confident. But I need just a little guarantee.'

21064 <![CDATA[Aussies get tough Asian Cup qualifier draw]]> Australia face a tricky route to the 2011 Asian Cup finals after being drawn in a difficult qualification group which includes Oman and Kuwait. The draw for the qualifying tournament, held at the Aspire Dome in Doha on Thursday, placed the Socceroos in Group B with the two Gulf sides and Indonesia.

Although Oman and Kuwait recently failed to advance to the final stage of the Asian qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup, both teams have provided tough opposition for Australia since they joined the Asian Football Confederation in 2006.

Kuwait beat Australia 2-0 during the qualifying tournament for the 2007 Asian Cup, while Oman were unlucky not to see off the Socceroos at last year's Asian Cup finals as a stoppage-time equaliser from Tim Cahill salvaged a 1-1 draw in Bangkok.

Three-time Asian champions Japan, who will have to negotiate the qualifiers after losing to South Korea in the third-place play-off at the last Asian Cup, have once again been placed alongside Bahrain.

The two sides met twice in the third round of the World Cup qualifiers this year and are scheduled to play each other again in the final round, which commences in September.

They are now set for at least two more matches in the next couple of years after being placed in Group A alongside Hong Kong and Yemen.

Another three-time champion, Iran, are in Group E with Jordan, Singapore and Thailand.

Uzbekistan are the top seeds in Group C, which comprises United Arab Emirates, Malaysia and India, while China are in Group D with Vietnam, Syria and Lebanon.

The top two sides in each group will advance to the finals, where they will join hosts Qatar, defending champions Iraq, 2007 runners-up Saudi Arabia and South Korea as well as the winners of the 2008 and 2010 AFC Challenge Cups.

The Asian Cup qualifying tournament is scheduled to begin in January.

21062 <![CDATA[Manchester United quality gives Neville hope]]> Gary Neville believes Manchester United FC possess the talent and desire to become the first team since AC Milan in 1990 to retain the European Champion Clubs' Cup.

The English club defeated Chelsea FC to lift their third European crown in Moscow in May, and are now looking forward to setting out on the road to Rome 2009 with the intention of becoming the first club to win consecutive UEFA Champions Leagues since the new format was introduced in the early 1990s. "We have to make sure we go for it again and I'm desperate to be part of it," the right-back told MUTV. "I think we are better equipped than in 1999 [to retain the trophy]. The strength of the squad is enormous. I do feel we are in a better position but we have to show that mentality and show we can do it again. No Manchester United team has been able to do that."

21061 <![CDATA[Sampdoria swoop for Stankevicius]]> Sampdoria have signed Lithuanian international full-back Marius Stankevicius from Serie B side Brescia Calcio for an undisclosed fee.

No further details have been released for the transfer of the 26-year-old, who has been capped 38 times by his country. Stankevicius joined Brescia from FK Ekranas in 2001 playing 56 top-flight games and, following the club's relegation, another 101 in the second division.

Sampdoria, who will enter the 2008/09 UEFA Cup first round, have been searching for a right-back since off-loading Christian Maggio to SSC Napoli and Cristian Zenoni to Bologna FC earlier this summer.
